PART A – SECTION SUMMARY

A.1 Executive Summary

The highlight of the year 2000 is the First Hiroshima Student Symposium ( HISS 2000), which was held on January 18 and 19, 2000 in Hiroshima. The goal of the HISS 2000 was to attain one of the goals of the Hiroshima Section, that is, to support growth of students with independence and spirit of enterprise. HISS 2000 had two characteristics; one is that students themselves carried out planning and management of the symposium, and the other is that all the technical papers in HISS 2000 were presented by students in the interactive sessions. In addition, most of them operated equipment at the individual exhibition booths, including computers, network analyzers, video players and so on. Since the goal of HISS 2000 was well understood by many individuals and corporations, the major part of the income of the symposium were obtained by their donations.

The HISS 2000 was composed of one keynote speech, two panels and seventy three technical presentations. The number of attendees was 147. At the closing ceremony, two kinds of prizes were given; good paper awards including best paper award and good presentation awards. The symposium was reported on local television broadcasts and attracted the attention of many people in Hiroshima. The Second Hiroshima Student Symposium ( HISS 2001) was also held on January 13 and 14, 2001 in Hiroshima.

PART C – GOALS AND PLANS

C.1 Goals
(1) To support fostering independent and self-regulating students
(2) To communicate internationally in order to improve domestic system of research and education.
(3) To establish the democratic system of section management.

C.2 Detailed Implementation Plans
(1) Development of HISS (Hiroshima Student Symposium )
・ At the 2nd HISS (2001), we had 91 presentations,2 plenary talks, 2 panels and 189 attendees.
・ A paper review system was newly introduced.
・ The 3rd symposium should be a little different.
・ Other institutions except 3 main universities should give more presentations.
・ More citizens should be encouraged to attend.
・ Needs more cooperation of companies.
(2) Discussion with Korea, Taiwan and China in terms of EE and IT education.
・ They are located as close as other Japanese sections enough to visit easily from the Hiroshima Section.
・ Our education systems are quite different from each other.
・ We share the same characters for written communication..
・There are already many technical workshops between those countries and Japan, but no workshops on EE or IT education. We should study this possibility this year.

PART D – OTHERS

D-1 Relationship with National Societies
・ In Japan, we have very well-organized national technical societies for electrical, electronic and information engineerings, e.g. Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE).
・ They also have local branches as well as the national entity dividing the whole country into 8 areas just like IEEE Sections.
・ Thus, trying to be unique compared with those branches is most important for IEEE Hiroshima Section.
・ Uniqueness for us should be nothing but internationality.

２．IEEE広島支部講演会
総会に引き続き講演会を開催いたします。会員以外の方のご出席も歓迎します。

演 題： 機器・構造物の安全性に関わる２、３のトピックス
講演者： 幡中憲治氏 (山口大学工学部機械工学科教授、機械工学会材料力学部門長)
概　要： 航空機から電子機器にいたるまでの全ての機器・構造物はハードウェアーの安全性が確保されて初めてその機能を発揮する事ができる。本講演では、機器・構造物の損傷の具体例とその防止策、及び損傷を許容する設計における寿命予測法につき先ず紹介する。加えて、講演者が最近携わっている高温機器への実用化を目指し超高温下のセラミックス材料の力学的挙動と強度に関する研究に言及する。

なお、17:30から懇親会を予定していますので奮ってご参加下さい。
会費： 4,000円（自己負担分）
