講演内容 (Abstract)

English language education is becoming an increasingly important factor in determining the success of scientists and engineers as they enter the profession on graduation from university and continue to develop their career skills. Traditionally, university English programs have focused on 'general' English skills, providing the same materials in the same way to all students regardless of their department. However, the needs of students in science and engineering are much clearer and more specific than those of many other students. Therefore, a more focused and carefully designed English program is required. In this talk, I will first present a practical model for university English education that is tailored for scientists and engineers and can be implemented at any intuition regardless of the size of its student body or their starting ability level. I will also address the issue of non-specialist English teacher training and the roles of specialists in the design of English programs. Next, I will show results that clearly demonstrate the success of the proposed model in a very large-scale science and engineering English program in Japan. Finally, I will discuss the importance of English education in the workplace and offer practical ways in which companies may offer English support to their workers beyond simply forcing them to attend English conversation classes or take English proficiency tests.

講演者略歴 (Biography)

Prof. Li Ping received his Ph.D. degree at Glasgow University in 1990. He lectured at Department of Electronic Engineering, Melbourne University, from 1990 to 1992, and worked as a research staff at Telecom Australia Research Laboratories from 1993 to 1995. Since January 1996, he has been with the Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, where he is now a chair professor of information engineering.

Laurence Anthony is Professor of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, Japan. He has a BSc degree (Mathematical Physics) from the University of Manchester, UK, and MA (TESL/TEFL) and PhD (Applied Linguistics) degrees from the University of Birmingham, UK. He is a former director and current technical English program coordinator at the Center for English Language Education (CELESE), Waseda University. His main interests include corpus linguistics tools development and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program design and methodologies. Professor Anthony received the National Prize of the Japan Association for English Corpus Studies (JAECS) in 2012 for his work in corpus software tools design. He has served as the Chair of the Japan Chapter of the IEEE Professional Communication Society and has published in various IEEE and other international journals.
