IEEE Japan Council Women in Engineering affinity group was officially
established May 2, 2005. This is the first WIE affinity
group in Japan.

WIE Japan cooperated with the event for high school girls entitled "Change the World! - Power of Women Scientists and Engineers" which was held on 20 March 2009 at Chuo University.

Software Japan 2009 IT Forum Session
IT Diversity Forum, " Mentoring Activities for Diversity Promoting"
On January 27, 2009, WIE Japan co-hosted a lecture meeting "Mentoring
Activities for Diversity Promoting" (one of IT Forum sessions of "Software Japan 2009" hosted by Information Processing Society of Japan) with IT diversity Forum of Information Processing Society of Japan.
In the meeting, three speakers gave their keynote speeches. There were Mentoring promoters who are from enterprise that talked about many topics related to the
significance and promotion of Mentoring. Also, there were talks from
pundits of mentoring activities that covered concrete key points for developing
and achieving careers based on diversity with mentoring activities.

"The Significance of Mentoring in Enterprise"
Kiyomi, Junko (Ricoh Leasing CO., LTD., Corporate Senior Vice President)
Considering Mentoring to be essential for improving the intellectual
productivity of enterprise from the management perspective, Mrs. Kiyomi is
running Mentoring Activities centering on counseling based communication.
She talked about how to bring up self-reliance specialists with examples
from her company.

"Support for Individual Adapted Mentoring"
Fujii, Sawako (Socio-tech Institute CO., LTD., Consultant)
Women who are trying to deal well with Work-life Balance and to construct
their careers may sometimes feel lost for choosing necessary support and
mentors (consulter). In such situations, it is important to build up their
own carrier by utilize "own efforts" and "others' helps". The speech will
introduce the necessary skills for mentors (adviser), present situation and
characteristic features for women, as well as their difference with the
case of men.

"Practical Mentoring Activities for Women Engineers in IT Enterprise"
Sugahara, Kayoko (IBM Japan, Ltd., Distinguished Engineer)
In the speech, activities, achievements as well as practical examples of
mentoring from IBM Japan were introduced. Additionally, it also covered
many global examples. Mentoring is important for self improvement. The
speech introduced how to make use of mentoring in career development no
matter in what place and in what situation.

- IEEE WIE Japan received an honorable mention in the 2006 WIE
Affinity Group of the Year Award.

- Dr. Hideko Kunii, Vice Chair of WIE Japan, received "IEEE Tokyo
Section Women Pioneer Award" from Dr. Harashima, Tokyo Section Chair.

- Our activity has been reported in the April 2006 issue of the Journal of the
Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers by
Prof. Kaoru Arakawa. See
