A1. What is the IEEE (Eye-triple-E)?

The IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 375,000 individual members in 160 countries. The full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is most popularly known and referred to by the letters I-E-E-E. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, others. The IEEE Japan Council has 38 Societies and three Technical Councils(TC). Through its technical publishing, conferences and consensus-based standards activities, the IEEE produces 30 percent of the world's published literature in electrical engineering, computers and control technology, holds annually more than 300 major conferences and has more than 860 active standards with 700 under development.

A2. Tell me about the IEEE organizations in Japan.

The IEEE is geographically made up of 10 Regions and 324 Sections world wide. Japan belongs to Region 10 (Asia-Pacific area) and holds the eight Sections, namely, Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kansai, Hiroshima, Shikoku and Fukuoka Sections. In June 1999, the IEEE Japan Council newly formed to coordinate the inter-Sectional activities of the eight Sections and also to provide effective representation and support for the Sections in Japan.

A3.Tell me the Japanese Official name of the IEEE.

A4. How to join the IEEE?

Please visit the IEEE HQ Homepage and you can apply on-line or you can download the application form (PDF). In any case, apply to IEEE HQ. If you are a student you can use the online Student Membership Application.

A5. How much is IEEE membership?

Visit the Membership Dues and Society Fees page . You can join as many Technical Societies as you like.The Society membership involves additional fees.

A6. How long does it take to receive my membership card and Spectrum?

First, you will receive an acknowledgement letter (contains member number) which is sent within 4 business days of receipt of the application. Next, New Member Welcome Kit (contains membership card and information) is sent within 16 business days of receipt of the application. Please note that depending upon where you live you can expect delivery to take 2 days to 2 weeks from the time of mailed-out date. New members receive their first issue of IEEE SPECTRUM on an expedited basis; regular delivery will take about to 6 to 10 weeks.

A7. What kind of periodicals can I subscribe with the Society membership?
How to subscribe?

There are now 37 IEEE Societies and each has a targeted technical interest. Visit the Customize Your Membership page, you can search the publication by Society. Also, you can overview more than 100 periodicals. If you hold IEEE membership and have an IEEE web account, you can at any time add Society membership, other membership options, or subscription to your membership.

A8.How much is the member discount when I buy the IEEE magaziene or books?

You can buy them in the price of the member by on-line. Please check the discount rate.(Click the " Store help"). If you have not registered the Web Account, please visit the page.

A9.Tell me how to search the IEEE articles.

Visit the IEEE Xplore and you can find the more than 730,000 article. If you search or download the article, you need to apply your Web Account. If you have not registered the Web Account, please visit the page. Access to content, search, other functionality, and features is based on your online subscription.

A10.Tell me about the IEEE membership grades.

Please visit IEEE HQ site of Member Grade Elevation. IEEE recommends you to obtain the highest grade most suitable to your qualification. New members may be assigned either Associate or Member grade, depending on their educational, technical or professional qualifications. Grades may be elevated as one's qualification change with new educational or professional experience. You can apply online for elevation to higher grade, visit the site of Upgrade Your Membership. All IEEE members receive the same basic benefits and services, with the exception of the rights to vote and hold elected office, which are reserved for Members, Senior Members and Fellows.

A11.How to change in my profile?

Please visit the page. If you have your web account, you can change your profile by online. Also you can do it by email. Please add your name and member number, when you contact by e-mail.

A12.How to contribute to IEEE publications?

Please visit the Information for Authors page. You will find the submission guideline, copyright transfer form, reprint information, etc. The contribution is welcome from any researchers other than IEEE members.

A10. How can I obtain the IEEE Standards?

In Japan, you can purchase the Standards through Japan Standard Association. If you are an IEEE member, you may place your order directly to IEEE, then you can receive a member discount.
