講演 「Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Communication Systems: Decoding Algorithms and VLSI Designs」

講演内容 (Abstract)

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes were originally proposed by Gallager in his famous Ph.D. thesis of 1960. It was demonstrated in the mid 1990s by MacKay that LDPC codes can achieve near-capacity performance. LDPC codes can be iteratively decoded using message passing algorithms. LDPC codes had been adopted in many standards for both wireless and wireline communications. Convergence speed in error-rate performance, which is affected by the decoding schedule, plays a critical role in the application of capacity-approaching LDPC codes to practical wireless systems such as WiFi and WiMAX systems.

In this talk, we will discuss decoding schedules from both algorithm and hardware viewpoints. Both dynamic and fixed decoding schedules that can enhance convergence speed in error-rate performance will be shared. Hardware-friendly schedules together with their VLSI architectures will be presented. For wireline applications such as 10GBASE-T systems, a fully-parallel decoder architecture is usually required in order to achieve an ultra-high throughput. For this part, we would like to share how to simplify the decoding algorithm that can facilitate the decoder hardware implementation.

講演者略歴 (Biography)

Dr. Yeong Luh Ueng

Department of Electrical Engineering
National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan

Yeong-Luh Ueng received the Ph.D. degree in communication engineering from the National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2001. From 2001 to 2005, he was with a private communication technology company, where he focused on the design and development of various wireless chips. Since December 2005, he has been a member of the faculty of the National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Communications Engineering.

His research interests include coding theory, wireless communications, and communication ICs. He has published 27 IEEE journal papers including 23 full papers. He also has presented 18 technical contributions related to the IEEE 802.16 standard. He was also invited to speak at the 6th International Symposium on Turbo Codes & Iterative Information Processing, one of the most well-known symposiums in the area of error correction coding. He was elected as an honorary member of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society. He also earned the Excellent Industry-Academia Collaboration Award, National Tsing-Hua University, in 2013 and 2014. He has been the recipient of the Distinguished Young Scholar Award from Taiwan IC Design society in 2015.
